We can typically rough-in a townhome in about two days, while a custom home runs five to six days — and the largest, most detailed custom homes we've wired have taken three weeks to a month. Townhomes are economically built with fewer frills, so they move fast; custom homes simply have more in them.
Tract and townhome builds are bid lean because they're repeatable and fast to wire. Custom homes cost more because they have more of everything — more circuits, more recessed cans, and specialty features like outdoor barbecue kitchens, hot tubs, and detailed lighting. On a custom build we also expect changes as the homeowner sees the space take shape, and we plan for that. Either way, every project is quoted in writing up front.
